• # John A Stage was a photographer. He has the mention of what might be a side business in the 1894-11-21 letter. Then he has the mention of winning a photo prize at the Worlds Fair. Photography had been a thing since the 1840s but George Eastman's Kodak camera was out in 1888.
• 1850-10-07 Federal census finds John(20) living in Chester, Orange Co., NY with a branch of the Knapp family- Alanson(40), Hannah M(40), Harrison M(6) and Sarah(14). Sarah is listed as Black.
• 1860-07-16 Federal census has John(28) living in Wayne, Pickaway Co., OH with wife Mary(24) and children Sarah "Celia"(6), Mary E.(5) Albert(2) and Catharine(1mos). There are "Aukrams" nearby, which could be "Ankram"...
• 1870-09-02 Federal census for Muhlenberg, Pickaway Co., OH, the Stages: John(38) living with first wife Mary(37) and children: Albert(13), Catherine(9), Ida(7), John(6) and Clara(2). They are family 171 at dwelling 172. John is a farm laborer. Family 164 at dwelling 165 is the Whitesides: William(69), Mary(45), Thomas(21), Sarah Celia (Stage, 16?), Richard(7). The Balin family(163), dwelling 164 are also nearby.
• 1880-06-08 Federal census - John(49) living with Mary(45) in Scioto, Pickaway Co., OH with children: Ida M(17), John E(14), Clara(12), Mary "Emma" (10), Viola "Stella"(2). They are family 79 at dwelling 79. John is a tin peddler. Family 82 at dwelling 82 is Edward Stage(38) with wife (Thankful) Francis(37) and children: Elizabeth(15) and Elmer(11). Arney, Seeds and Coontz families live nearby.
• 1880-06-08+ Also in the home nephew Samuel F Fetty(10). Nephew? Based on ancestry.com research, Mary Knapp had a younger sister named Emma who married a Samuel Fetty. Our first glimpse into the Knapp family.
• 1900-06-02 Federal census - John(69) and Mahala(61) living by themselves in District 033, Jackson, Franklin Co., OH. John is the Town Marshall (according to my best interpretation of the census).
• 1910-04-16 Federal census - John(77) living in District 0089, Pleasant, Madison Co., OH with Harrison(44), (Mary) Emma(39), and their children: Renzo(18) and Nellie M(14)
