• # Read somewhere of a Dutch tradition; when a child dies, the next child is named after the deceased child. There was a prior Mary E. Stage (04/25/1856-02/27/1870). This Mary Emma was the next kid.
• 1880-06-08 Federal census - John(49) living with Mary(45) in Scioto, Pickaway Co., OH with children: Ida M(17), John E(14), Clara(12), Mary "Emma" (10), Viola "Stella"(2). They are family 79 at dwelling 79. Family 82 at dwelling 82 is Edward Stage(38) with wife (Thankful) Francis(37) and children: Elizabeth(15) and Elmer(11).
• 1889-07-21 Married Harrison Redding in Pickaway Co., OH.
• 1889-10-21 Son Jon Emerson is born. Keep in mind Emma has been married to Harrison Redding since July. You know how that first baby math sometimes works. Seems like it might have just been a wink-wink, nod-nod situation like you see in lots of similar scenarios, but John was not Harrison Redding's son. However that worked out, Emma's sister Clara and her husband Andy Willoughby took John in. He remained with their family throughout.

• 1910-04-16 Federal census for District 0089, Pleasant, Madison Co.,OH the Reddings: Harrison(44), (Mary) Emma(39), and their children: Renzo(18) and Nellie M(14). Emma's father, John A Stage(77) lives with them.
• 1920-01-12 Federal census for Pleasant, Madison Co., OH has the Reddings: Harrison(54), Mary(49).
• 1930-05-06 Federal census for Pleasant, Madison Co., OH has the Reddings: Harrison(64), Emma(59).
• 1940-04-08 Federal census for Pleasant, Madison Co., OH has the Reddings: Harrison(74), Emma(69).
