• 1840 Federal Census - Mary Elizabeth is 7 and living in Catharine, Chemung Co. NY with her parents (Elias and Sarah), her younger sisters - Sarah (4) and Catherine (2) and her brother John L (3).
• 1848-02-03 marries Samuel Wood in Cambridge, MI. She is 14 years old. Marriage certificate was included with pension paperwork.
• 1848~02~03 What are Samuel and Mary doing in Michigan (besides getting married)?
• 1850 First child, Emma J Wood is born in NY. One might speculate she is home with her parents (per 1850 federal census) for help. Emma born in March, but not on census listing (Sept 13, 1850). Curious.
• 1850-09-13 Federal census has Mary E (16) living with Elias (41) and Sarah (36) at 1446 in Catharine, Chemung Co., NY . Also in the house: Sarah (14), John (12), Catherine (10), Jonathan (7). Neighbors to one side: Brazil Ganoung, wife Emiline, daughter Elizabeth (9). Neighbors to the other side: Elias and Hannah Darling and family - George (5) and Sophrona (3). Not sure these Darlings tie in to Darlings we meet in later letters.
• 1850-09-13 Federal census of Catharine, Chemung Co., NY shows "Elizabeth"(17) living with husband Samuel Wood(22) and daughter Emma J (x<1). They live next to(1409) family of Gilbert and Sarah Owen. These are almost certainly Samuel Owen's uncle & aunt. At 1408 we have Henry and Marian Smith. Tough to make assumptions about "Smith", but still... At 1412 we have Claret Ganung(36) and wife Jane(24) and Betsey Ganung(69). Children: Eliza(6) and Adelia(5). Adelia -> Ade? At 1413 we have John Frost(64), wife Eliza(61) and Sally M Frost (13) At 1365 Daniel and Elizabeth Mann. Mrs. Man? At 1307 a Daniel Hendrickson(20). Not sure it's "our" Uncle Dan Hendrickson? Too young.
• 1851-09-19 son George J Wood is born in New York. 1870 census indicated PA, but subsequent censuses where George would be the direct respondent say NY.
• 1853-08-18 daughter Mary A "Mate" Wood born in New York. 1870 census lists Mate as born in PA, but every subsequent census and her death certificate indicates NY.
• 1854 Deposition in pension application of widow Mary E Wood in 1891 mentions the purchase of a farm on Maple Hill about 37 years prior to her deposition (1891).
• 1855 - Emma J Wood (5) passes.
• 1855-09-15 son Charles A Wood born in Pennsylvania.
• 1857-01to04 - Deposition by Mary E Wood in pension records indicates the family moved back to NY about 1 and a half years after purchasing the farm in Maple Hill. Would be before Kate was born in May.
• 1857-05-17 daughter Sarah Catherine "Kate" Wood born in Catherine, Schuyler Co., NY.
• 1859-01to10 - Deposition by Mary E Wood in pension records indicates the family moved back to the farm on Maple Hill, Tioga, Pa about 3 years after moving back to Odessa, Schuyler, NY. Would be before November, when Herb is born.
• 1859-11-13 son Herbert M Wood born in Charleston, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.
• 1860 Where are the Woods on the census?
• 1861-10-09 son William Henry "Harry" Wood born in Charleston, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.
• 1864-10-26 daughter Ida E Wood born in Pennsylvania.
• 1866 Mary Elizabeth's husband, Samuel, dies from illness contracted in Civil War enlistment barracks. After that her children spend a lot of time living with relatives and neighbors.
• 1866-05-23 daughter Helen Augusta Wood born in Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.
• 1870 - daughter Ida dies from scarlet fever in Ovid, NY.
• 1870 Federal census lists Helen Wood, age 37, living with another Helen Wood, age 4, in Tioga Co., PA. The elder Helen is a "typo"; it's really Mary Elizabeth (Ganoung) Wood.
• 1885-1890 Family letters place Mary in Mansfield, PA (or at least using the Mansfield post office.
• 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Federal Census place Mary E Wood in Mansfield.
• 1895 Family letter places Mary in Lambs Creek, PA.
• 1901-07-19 Mansfield Advertiser reports Nellie Stage (10) of Nelson, PA was visiting her grandmother for a few weeks.
• Mary E spends a lot of time wondering about her pension. Eventually she does get one. It probably didn't come in time to be of benefit.
