• # The use of "Ella" as a nickname seems to diminish over time and is not consistent across her family and friends.
• 1870-06-28 federal census records show a "Helen Wood"(37) living with Helen Wood (4) in Sullivan, Tioga Co., PA. The elder "Helen" is almost certainly an incorrectly recorded "Mary Elizabeth". The ages align exactly. Dwelling 227 and Family 228. Dwelling 228 and Family 230 are Arad(70) and Margery (Ganung) Smith(68). Dwelling 229 and Family 231 is Arad and Margery's son Charles Ganung Smith (47), his wife Sarah(50), his kids: Margery(26), Julia (14), Freddus(7) AND Helen's brother Herbert Wood(10) Dwelling 230 and Family 232 is Charles's son Byron(21) and his wife Maria(19).
• 1880-06-24 federal census, Helen(13) is living with Arad(79) & Margery(77) Smith in Sullivan, Tioga Co., PA. She's listed as "niece". They still live next to Charles Ganung Smith(57) with his new wife, Rose(39) and son Freddus(17).
• 1885-09-16 letter from Aunt Sarah Owen puts Helen(19) living with her mother in Mansfield, PA with her mother.
• 1887-03-02 letter indicates that Helen(20) is living with her aunt and uncle, Samuel B. Owen and Sarah D Ganoung in Odessa, Schuyler Co., NY. Sarah passes in August of that year.
• 1889-03-15 letter from sister, Mate, has Helen(22) living in Lambs Creek, Tioga Co,. PA but soon (if not already) relocating to Ohio.
• 1889-04-04 letter from Louie Thetge put Helen in Mt. Sterling, Madison Co., OH.
• 1891 letter from John A Stage indicates Helen(25) and Bert and their children: Tessie(2) and Nellie (5mos) have returned to Lambs Creek, Tioga Co., PA. The move was late 1890, early 1891.
• 1900-06-04 federal census - Helen(34) and Bert(42) living in Nelson, Tioga Co., PA with three children: Tessie(11), Nellie(9) and Fred(5). Farm laborer Charles Hobson(36) is also listed.
• 1910-05-10 Federal census has Helen(44) living with Bert(52) in Lawrence Township, Tioga Co., PA with their 4 kids: Tessie(21), Nellie(19), Fred(15) and Mary(9). Living with them: Helen's brother Charles A Wood(54).
• 1920-01-21 Federal census has Helen(53) and Bert(61) living in Lawrenceville, Tioga Co,, PA with son Fred(24).
• 1930-04-25 Federal census Helen(63) and Bert(72) are still living on their farm in Lawrence Township, Tioga Co., PA.
• 1940-04-16 Federal census has Helen (73) alone in Lawrence, Tioga Co,, PA.
• Interesting that Ella gets top billing - "Dear Ella & sister", especially as Sarah is sending the letter in care of her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Ganoung) Wood.
